Dark, Dark, Dark Looms the Canopy of Clouds
On September 15, 2019, Westerhoff School officially opened GALERIE WESTERHOFF, Metuchen’s new home for curated fine art exhibitions from regional artists. The art gallery debuts with “Dark, Dark, Dark Looms the Canopy of Clouds”, an exhibition of paintings and drawings by the school’s own art teachers, Preeti Singh, Jonathan Adams, and Jane Westrick. Celebrating correlations between art and music, the artists explore connections between their work and the cycles of nature.
The artists present their new work inspired by the legend of Tansen, a 16th century musician who was employed in Mughal Emperor Akbar’s court. According to legend, Tansen could light up lamps and bring rain with his songs. His melodies often had associations with specific times of day and the seasons. Over the centuries, these associations, especially the theme of the rain song, have inspired many musicians. In this tradition, 20th century singer Dinkar Kaikini wrote a song describing the beauty of rain, “Dark, Dark, Dark Looms the Canopy of Clouds”, from which the show takes its name.
The installation is open to the public during the school’s regular business hours through December 2019. You can also view Galerie Westerhoff on October 13th from 2 to 6 PM during the Gallery Walk & Fine Arts Fair.
About the Artists
Preeti Singh’s work is defined by simplification of form, pulsating textural treatment and vibrant color. Preeti’s recent paintings depict images from her immediate surroundings and past experiences that merge together to create dreamlike narratives. They reflect the influences of east and west, and are an assimilation of her life in the United States and India.
Jonathan Adams’ work draws upon mythology and observational conversation with peers and viewers. Being a black man in the Christian south lead to difficulties finding a community and understanding his identity. Visual art was a bridge to initiate dialogues with peers and family. He uses visual art as a means of understanding. Within his work, he explores aspects of perceived identity using scenarios of the human condition and history.
Jane Westrick’s paintings explore performances of gender by female and androgynous soccer players and dancers in the sports arena and on the dance floor. In a new series of works, she continues with her subject matter of athletes and soccer fields, now under the condition of being caught in the rain. Inspired by her memories of playing soccer on muddy fields, she is interested in the physicality of paint as mud, the surface of the painting as a field, and the unique color relationships that occur in rainy conditions.
For Future Exhibitions
Earth Studios is proud to partner with Galerie Westerhoff for managing the gallery and curating forthcoming shows. Earth Studios will primarily be responsible for conceptualizing and executing various exhibitions, which involves sending out call-to-artists, selecting applications and art pieces, liaising with artists, and assisting in content creation and strategies for marketing efforts.
