The critically acclaimed Terell Stafford Quintet headlines the Metuchen Jazz Fest on Saturday, May 18, 2019. The Westerhoff School of Music & Art Jazz Faculty based in Metuchen, Metuchen High School Jazz Big Band, Metuchen High School Jazz Ensemble and New Brunswick Brass Band will also perform.
Doors open at 4 PM in the Metuchen High School Auditorium which is easily accessible from NJ Turnpike/Exit 10, Garden State Parkway Exit 132 and NJ Transit NE Corridor – Metuchen. Suggested Donation: $10.
Terell Stafford has been hailed as “one of the great players of our time, a fabulous trumpet player” by piano legend McCoy Tyner. Stafford is an incredibly gifted and versatile trumpet player who combines a deep love of melody with his own brand of spirited and adventurous lyricism. Stafford is the Director of Jazz Studies and Chair of Instrumental Studies at Temple University, founder and band leader of the Terell Stafford Quintet, and Managing and Artistic Director of the Jazz Orchestra of Philadelphia (JOP). Stafford is renowned in the jazz world as an educator, performer and leader who has received countless award nominations and accolades and can be heard on well over 130 albums.
Andrea Brachfeld, recent recipient of the “Best Jazz Flute “award from Hot House Magazine, has associated with Hubert Laws, Tito Puente, Paquito D’ Rivera, Wallace Roney. Wycliffe Gordon, Dave Valentin, and Ray Barretto, among others. Her new CD, “If Not Now, When?” which was released on Jazzheads in May of 2018, showcases her Quartet “Insight” and reflects the recently composed music from the New Jazz Work grant she received from Chamber Music America and the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation. “Brachfeld is an incredibly skilled jazz player, her tone resonates and her lines pour out and hang in mid-air,” said Marc Meyer of JazzWax.
Funding for this festival has been provided in part by a grant from the Westerhoff School of Music & Art, and The Middlesex County Board of Chosen Freeholder through a grant award from the Middlesex County Cultural and Arts Trust Fund.
The Metuchen Arts Council fosters, promotes, encourages and celebrates the Arts in Metuchen, in order to enhance the quality of life and spirit of community for all of the residents of the Borough.
